Long miniseries before most of the episodes which show you backstory of different gods and such are also a mixed bag - some are good, some boring, and many serve no purpose whatsoever. Story is trying to develop in all different directions at the same time and fails miserably.
Nothing of note happening in ENTIRE episodes (and those are full hour long), boring dialogues about nothing, concluding to nothing, and changing nil in characters afterwards. Hell, some sitcoms have better story compared to American Gods. Writing and story for 1 season is just aweful, incoherent, not-happening and generally boring, one of the worst really.
I've read the book, I've watched tons of tv series, and unfortunately have to conclude that Fuller produced something that is both lacking the punch of the original book and is in fact worse than average tv series. Don't believe people stomping 10's for this one. i absolutely plan to keep watching, and I'm hoping that I have a different opinion about it by the end of the season! … Expand Where as now I feel like everything is utterly predictable. IMO, if they would've added new dialogue and subtleties to the narrative it could've had a fresh artistic/cinemagraphic life. I've just started the show and one of my biggest concerns is how they took a lot of aesthetic/visual liberties but capitalize on each scene and conversation in the novel. Though just like an MMORPG, you've got to be committed to make something of it. It captures a balance between realism and fantasy, which for the most part is seemingly intangible. I genuinely liked the book - which brings an innovative genre mix to the literary table. Shows, games, or movies SHOULDN'T be about politics in a non-political story, American God sometimes spreads beliefs of SJW’s, Black Lives Matter” (or equality at that time), and homosexuality rights, although I do agree with BLM and homosexuality rights (I’m not a fan of Sjws), I do not support spreading your personal beliefs into a show, no matter what political agenda you support.
Politics and social justice: for me, I don’t like it when shows, movies, or video games introduce political beliefs as a way to spread those views, even if I do agree with them. For American Gods the action in this show doesn’t live up to my actual taste of action, but I’m sure lots of people love the way they pull it off in this. Things I don't like: Action: lots of many people would rather there be no Action in shows they like, and I respect that, but in my personal opinion, I like to spice up my shows with pretty good action, although a lot of the shows I love have low action in them. for me personally, I love these characters and the way they develop after actually knowing about the existence of Gods living in America, especially Laura moon after finding out Odin killed her to take advantage of his son shadow moon. Character development: the story consists of multiple characters that develop along the way as you progress throughout the show, such as Laura moon, shadow moon, and etc. The main character, that being shadow moon, is a very interesting character with a lot of history that is eventually given to the viewer, and the actual way they showcase the Gods in this show is very good in my opinion. The story: the story is pretty damn good, it consists of multiple ancient Gods from the old European, African, and Native American days, lots of which are interesting to watch as the story Folds out in front of you.
The concept: honestly, this show is kind of refreshing to see, this story is about mainly European Gods in America fighting against the new “Tech” Gods with the help of shadow moon after his wife “dies”, what’s refreshing you might ask? Well, for one tiny example: most tv shows these days are just bland shows with no uniqueness or personality that make the material they’re selling actually stand out out, and are mostly rip offs from each other.
